Madeira Musical instruments
Music is a source of inspiration for the Madeiran art. The islanders are, in general, joyful people and always ready for a party. We can feel it in the living rhythms of their music and the joy of the songs. Among the most characteristic musical instruments, there is the Braguinha, a small four-string guitar that came with the first settlers of Madeira.
Later, in the nineteenth century, it was brought to Hawaii by a Madeiran emigrant who founded a music store. Renamed to Ukalales (bouncy fleas) became a Hawaiian icon. Regional folk dances are also accompanied by two other string instruments: the Rajão and Viola de Arame. The Brinquinho is used to hit the beat of folk music, consisting of circular frames with colorful traditional costumes dolls knocking castanets every time you pull the stick.
The musical ensembles Band d’Além and Xarabanda are composed by talented local musicians and scholars who have sought to perpetuate traditional music. They have done an exhaustive field work, collecting songs and traditional music throughout the island
