A magnificent replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship, the Santa Maria, was built on the island of Madeira, between July 1997 and July 1998, in the fishing village of Camara de Lobos. Since it was built thousands of people have sailed aboard the ship, experiencing more than just a normal boat ride, as you’ll soon find out on this 3-hour tour. Santa Maria de Colombo is also the most photographed boat in Madeira. A number of local and international TV documentaries have been made on board this famous ship, including The Discovery Channel’s The Quest for Columbus. The idea of this boat trip is for you to experience history, while at the same time enjoying the breathtaking views of Madeira´s south coast. La croisière à bord du Madeira Pirate Ship a été l'un des moments forts de nos vacances. Le bateau est magnifique et vous donne vraiment l'impression de naviguer dans une autre époque. L'équipage nous a raconté des anecdotes intéressantes sur l'île et son histoire, et l'ambiance à bord était détendue et joyeuse.

Für uns war es ein wunderschöner Tag. Das Schiff ist wirklich sehr schön, uns hat die Fahrt gut gefallen, wir konnten Delfine beobachten, und es wurde zum schwimmen im Atlantik angehalten. Sicher wäre es authentischer gewesen wenn das Schiff unter gesetzten Segeln gefahren wäre, jedoch würden dann die angesetzten 3 Stunden nicht für alles ausreichen. Nach der Schwimmpause wurde das Hauptsegel kurzzeitig gesetzt, genug um ein paar schöne Fotos zu machen, es gab eine Verkostung von Honigkuchen und Madeirawein. Die Crew war freundlich.

We had a fantastic time aboard the Santa Maria pirate ship in Madeira.The young and enthusiastic crew were incredibly knowledgeable, keeping us informed about the stunning surroundings and the dolphin sightings along the way. One of the highlights was the onboard wine tasting, paired with delicious traditional Madeira cake — a perfect touch that added to the authentic feel of the trip. The ship itself is beautifully crafted, a striking replica of Columbus’s vessel, and adds a sense of adventure and history to the whole journey.
Sailing on the Santa Maria was a truly memorable experience. We had warm sunshine, then dark, brooding clouds and finally, a lovely sunset. The choppy sea meant we sailed east and didn’t see any whales but the view of the cliffs along the coast was stunning and the changing light made for some great photos. Approaching the airport gave a good view of its structure and incoming flights made for an interesting sight. The Madeira and Bolo de Mel were very welcome and sailing into Funchal in the sunset was beautiful. Thanks to the excellent crew.
