Fanal Medium Madeira Trail Tour

Next to the viewpoint of Ribeira da Janela we begin this Madeira Trail Tour track by the path of Tranquada heading in the path of the Castanheiros that climbs a 500m hill to Fanal. Along the climb we begin to observe a change in vegetation, starting to enter the Laurens Forest full of Laurels (Laurus novocanariensis), Vinhático (Persea indica) and Tree Heath (Erica arborea), ending in a grove of centenarians stinkwoods (Ocotea foetens).

With the arrival at the top next to the pond of Fanal, classified as a Rest and Silence Reserve, we find some cows that usually are grazing over there and then we follow the Levada dos Cedros covering its 6 km from it’s source until Curral Falso, contouring the hills of the right bank of the Ribeira da Janela always involved inside the Laurens Forest. Arriving to Curral Falso, we begin the descent to the Ribeira da Janela, in a path almost entirely made of wooden steps.
