There are not many mountain peaks that you can reach by car. But, 1818 meters Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak in Madeira, is one of the few rare. Plunging back under the clouds, you will notice that the mountains are covered with lush vegetation, including heather, moss and the impressive purple Echium candicans, known as the pride of Madeira.
