The São Tiago Fortress is located in Funchal. This fortress was built at the beginning of the 17th century with the aim of defending the port of Funchal, it is an urban fort with military architecture. Over time, the fortress performed functions such as quartering British troops or the Army Police, as well as serving as a shelter for victims of the flood of 1803. Recently this space was used as a museum of Contemporary Art, which in 2015 was transferred to the Casa das Mudas in Calheta
