Cabo Girão is the highest cape viewpoint in Europe, at 580 meters high with fantastic panoramic views of the ocean and the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, whole Funchal and the immensity of the sea.
Here you will find the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, which was built in 1931 and is one of the main pilgrimage sites on the island.
In view of the extraordinary beauty of this place and its special conditions, the travel magazine Cond Nast Traveler chose Cabo Girão as the fifth cliff with the best views in the world.
From up there, the skywalk offers you a dizzying view of the Rancho and Cabo Girão fajãs with small area of cultivated land called Fajãs do Cabo Girão. In the past this place was only accessible by boat but in 2003, an elevator was built there, which is called ‘’cable car Rancho’’, and you can still visit the place and go along the coast of the huge cliff down to Fajã dos Padres.
And you are a adrenaline junkie this is a privileged place for paragliding and base-jumping.
Why does it call ‘’Cabo girão’’?
The name of the cable (Cabo) was given by the discoverers, since the great promontory served as a point of reference as the end of the tour(Giro) on the first day of reconnaissance of Madeira's sea coast.
