The PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo Hiking Trail begins and end in Achada do Teixeira has a length of 2.8 km (2.8 Km + return) with a duration of 1 hour 30 (one way and return), which allows access to the summit of the highest point of the island of Madeira, Pico Ruivo.
Next to the shelter of Pico Ruivo will have access to 3 other official routes that lead to different points of the island: PR1 Vereda do Pico do Areeiro Hiking Trail, PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada Hiking Trail and PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha Hiking Trail. At Achada do Teixeira you can also visit the “man standing,” basaltic rock formation that is after passing through the front Teixeira Achada shelter house.
This area is part of the European network of important community-Natura 2000- sites with the central mountain massif name, including the highest peaks and heights of 1200 meters altitude. It is characterized by herbaceous and shrub vegetation well adapted to large temperature variations, heavy rains and strong winds is dominated by heather (Heather broom -Erica platycodon subsp. Maderincola and Heather Molar).
