Located in Quinta Monte Palace, Monte Palace Tropical Garden has about 100,000 plant species. This garden has a collection of cycads (encephalartos) which, because of their age, are considered living fossils.
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is located at the Quinta Monte Palace, a property which belongs to the José Berardo Foundation.This garden collection has been enriched with plants from all over the world; and about 100,000 plant species have been planted, including azaleas, heathers, different trees, and a wide variety of ferns. The garden also features a collection of cycads (encephalartos) which, because of their age, are considered living fossils.
Of the 72 known species, this garden has about 60 varieties.
There is also an area devoted to Madeiran flora, displaying several species of the Macaronesian Laurissilva, in addition to other endangered species like the Pittosporum coriaceum, commonly known as “Mocan”.
