The João Gonçalves Zarco Statue is located in Funchal. In order to perpetuate the figure and work of João Gonçalves Zarco, the General Board of the District asked Francisco Franco who executed this statue. The Silva of Cristino architect was in charge of the pedestal of the project, which was represented allegorical elements related to the Discoveries: Settlement, Conquest, Wisdom and Evangelization.
After choosing the site, proceeded to the inauguration of the monument. Thus, in 1934, she arose at the intersection of Avenidas Zarco and Arriaga, the statue of Zarco. This statue won the gold medal in the Ibero-American Exposition in Seville in 1929.
