Madeira Island Population has a density higher than the average of the country and the European Union (300 hab./km²). However, 75% of the population of Madeira island lives in only 35% of the territory, especially on the south coast, where Funchal city, capital of Madeira, which concentrates 45% of the population (130,000 inhabitants) with a population density of 1500 hab./km². This is also the area which is located most hotels.

 

According to the Foreigners and Borders Service, the Madeira Autonomous Region had, in late 2009, 7105 foreigners, natural order of decreasing more contingent, respectively, of Brazil (1300), United Kingdom (912), Venezuela ( 732) and Ukraine (682).

 

The Madeira population is traditionally follower of Roman Catholicism, although today this identification tends to be partly nominal.
According to studies in December 31, 2014, the resident population in Madeira is 256,686 people.
